The ABCs of DISC

For the most part the test accurately gauges my management orientation. I am a major C minor D. This means that I am diplomatic, tactful, cautious, careful and systematic person that needs accurate information before I make a decision. I don’t think I would want to be another type of manager. That would be like change of identity if I change from a C to I, S, or even D type of manager. It is definitely helpful to determine people’s management “type” to better understand where they are coming from. This way we will have less conflict due to personality differences. We will be better able to understand others like they would understand us. This also relate to culture diversity and the same reasons why I am minor in psychology is to understand people better and not make a judgment on what they do.

I would want a D type of leader that would listen to a very knowledge and intelligent C type of person with me in the winter survival scenario we discussed in class. The reason for that is, we need someone that is so powerful that would force everyone to do what he/she think would make everyone survive. We also need a very intelligent C type of person on the team to make decision with accurate information. I think it’s the combination of two that would make the whole group survive.

  1. You are right that D type of leaders will definitely make the process of decision making smoother in many occasions. I want to be the D type person as well because it gets you to be more powerful.

  2. I also was a C and a high D. I think that the combination of those two types would make great managers. I do think that D and C combined are the most powerful and can get a job done well and efficiently. Although, not having that creative side to being a D or C could be detrimental. To surround yourself around people who are the opposite would make a great team. I think that having a well rounded group would be the best way of surviving.

  3. I also think that C plus D is a good combination. Like what you mentioned in your blog, you can be firm and at the same time, be analytical in every plan you’re making. I think you can be a great manager with the C and D traits. You can carry out your tasks that are well thought-out and not just because they’re your idea.

However, I think it’ll be harder for just plain D-type of leader to take in other people’s opinions. They tend to block out others’ plans and stick with the plan they have in mind. In the case of the stranded! situation, the Dominant leader might also lead everyone into the direction they want instead of hearing others’ thoughts (whether it’s a C-type of member or not).

  4. i think a major C plus a high d is a good combination. you not only have the ability to think carefully and systematic, but also can make quick decision which is a missing part from a C person. Moreover, prof said that a C plus D is the most creative mind in a company.
on the other hand, it also makes you harder to accept others people's opinions. since you think carefully and has a trait of dominance, you might trend to think that you have the best idea.

  5. I agree with you, but a D leader would also make irrational decisions. Even thought they would "force" someone to do what they wanted, what they want might not be the best thing for the group. For example, I forced everyone in my group to leave the crash site to the nearest village, which would be the wrong decision.

  6. I think it's pretty interesting that judging from how vocal our class is that we don't have more "Major D" personalities.
