Current MGT Problem

In today’s economy, I think the biggest management problem faced by many companies is how to fire the lazy worker to save budget. That might sound simple, yet it might be a very difficult job for many managers. A tricky task is how to determine the hard working employees from the non productive workers in an office when jobs are not specifically divided. Many of us that have a job might already had deal with these social loafing partners that simply let you do their job then take all the credits when the boss/manager is around. Those people are usually very sociable, suck up to their supervisors, take extra lunch time and spend all their working time for personal pressure.

When time comes for project deadline, they find plenty of excuses and complain that others are not working as hard as they are. What happens is that the manager will believe them and give their unfinished work to other workers. When comes to laying off workers in difficult situation, these lazy workers stay and the quiet hard working one might be the first to leave. As much as I hate this, I still hadn’t come up with a good plan to deal with my lazy co-worker. May be it’s simply because I do not like to turn myself into what my enemies are like, too reluctant to play their dirty tricks and to reveal their open secrets to my supervisor. Or I might be waiting for others like me to take action first.

  1. Hey Jenny quick question how were you able to get such a big profile picture? I keep trying and all I get is a tiny ant sized picture..lol

Okay well anyway, I agree with you that there are many lazy people working in jobs, they actually don't do much but take credit for the hard work of others. I've seen this myself at my current job. For your co-worker I guess you can just be nice to him or her and try to encourage the person to work harder?

  2. I think you are waiting for others to take action first. What I would do in this situation is go and have a nice positive chat with the lazy co-worker. If the co-worker does not change his behavior as time goes on, then I would tell the supervisor and give him/her a list of examples of the co-worker's poor performance.
For the group project, I would suggest you email the supervisor the progress of the project. List the work assigned to each group member and mark the completed task. Now for the lazy co-worker, tell the supervisor to contact the lazy co-worker because you can't seem to get any progress information from him/her.

  3. Piggybacking other people’s works is very common in many jobs. Usually along with this skill, they’re also very sociable and great in communication. But I’ll say in this kind of economic situation, I was told (by my own supervisor) that managers actually do see who’s productive and who’s not. If they lay off the actual “hardworking workers”, that means maybe they treasure those “lazy workers’” communication skills? A lot of people can only work, but when it comes to present their information, they’re not as great.

I think you can't do nothing about these kind of workers, you just have do your part of the job and have your manager see what you are capable of doing that other co-workers can't do.

  4. I agree with you that we don't want to turn ourselves to others' enemies. I will try to find a good way to talk with my lazy co-workers about their job performance. I will ask them about how they feel about their performance. If they don't change their behavior, I will just do my part of job. I think the manager will find out how lazy they are very soon.

  5. I think that you should give your managers more credit. Although it may seem that the lazy workers have built a great rapport with their bosses, they've ultimately gone out of their way to hold conversations in lieu of of actually doing their jobs.

I feel that quiet workers who actually do their job are quite appreciated by their bosses. It would also help to make your bosses aware of the piggybackers and stand up for the hard-working people.
